Radar Detector Review: Escort Passport 9500ix
Apr 23rd
No one is advocating breaking the law here. Speed limits are there for a reason and are responsible for saving lives. However, a full-time road warrior often finds himself on the high side of the posted limit. And with the crazy high court costs tacked onto tickets these days, just one or two citations can wreck your bottom line for a month. It makes sense to get a radar detector to remind you that you need to slow down and avoid enriching whatever county you happen to be passing through. One of the best-selling detectors on the market is the Escort Passport 9500ix, and there are two great reasons why you should buy one.
The first reason that you should consider the Escort Passport 9500ix is that it gives you faster recognition of true police radar. In side by side tests with comparable detectors, the Escort Passport 9500ix consistently outperformed its competitors. Until you’ve actually driven with a radar detector, you may not appreciate the difference of a second or two. But having an extra second or two to react could make the difference between a speeding ticket and a friendly wave. The Passport really gives you extra reaction time to keep your record ticket-free.
The second reason you should take another look at the Escort Passport 9500ix is its ability to remember the locations of false alarms. The only thing worse than not slowing down for true radar is reacting to a false alarm. Urban areas especially are filled with radio wave sources that could cause your detector to light up unnecessarily. The Passport accomplishes this in two different ways. First, if you want to be proactive, you can inform the detector that it has just identified a false signal. This is done by three quick presses of a button. The other way takes no interaction at all. As soon as the 9500ix is driven by the same false alarm three times, it will automatically lock it out. You’ll never be troubled by that particular false alarm again.
The Blackberry Storm for Business
Apr 6th
Business today lives and dies by the smartphone. And nothing says business in a smartphone like the Blackberry name. Although some might see the company’s phones as less edgy than some other brands, they consistently provide value to the digital marketing professional.
The Blackberry Storm smartphone is the company’s first venture into the “touchscreen” market. It also includes some new, advanced features for its brand. The battery has a much longer life, which can make the difference between just starting a conversation and closing the deal. The camera comes with 3.2 megapixel resolution for surprisingly clear photos and video clips. The Storm also includes the ability to load and watch movies and listen to music files, which could make solitary nights or long layovers a little more bearable.
The Storm is not without a few dark clouds, though. For one, there’s the bulky size. Unlike the slimmer iPhone, the Blackberry Storm has a bigger handset to accommodate its extended-life battery. You won’t have to charge it as frequently as the older models, but you won’t be able to simply slide it into your pocket and forget about it. There’s also a bit of a learning curve with the touchscreen operation. You need to press down a little harder on the screen than you would with an iPhone. The Storm does not allow you to move pages by spreading two fingers, but it does let you hover your finger over the screen and drop cursors elsewhere.
What’s the bottom line? The Blackberry Storm is a good choice if you love the Blackberry brand but want an upgrade. There are several more features in the Storm than in the older models; a longer battery life, and a good camera. If you hate having to press down on tiny keypad buttons, then give the Blackberry Storm a try and see if it is a better fit for your life and business.
Nokia N97 Provides Smartphone Features at a Budget Price
Mar 25th
We all know that sometimes your business bottom line doesn’t quite cover your business needs. This can often be the case when it comes to buying the tech you need to get the job done. If you’re looking for a smartphone that doesn’t send your accountant into a fit, then you should take a look at the Nokia N97. This older model phone is still available on eBay and other outlets can could be just what you need for staying connected on the road.
The Nokia N97 is a small, touchscreen phone that was released in June of 2009. It works on the 3G network, but can also connect to a WiFi network for even faster speeds. It includes standard smartphone features like Bluetooth connectivity and a camera (including video). You can connect it to your computer to equip it with even more apps and files.
The 5-megapixel camera is able to capture reality with excellent sharpness and detail. Like the iPhone, the Nokia N97 contains a motion sensor so you can tilt it around and change to a landscape view. It also contains 32 gigabytes of memory, which is perfect for storing presentations, proposals and other documents. Another beneficial feature of this smartphone is that it has a slide-out keypad. You can choose to use the touchscreen to type, or you can pull out the keyboard and use that.
One disadvantage of the Nokia N97 is the slightly thicker size. It is about as heavy and thick as a Blackberry phone. This provides a better grip for people with bigger hands or fingers, but it can feel bulky in your pocket. It also has a “double-tap” feature that requires you to tap twice to choose a selection. This is supposed to minimize mistakes when tapping, but it can be annoying if you want a quick-response screen. Also, you must lock and unlock the screen by pressing one of the hardware buttons. You cannot use the phone entirely by the touchscreen, which may be bothersome for some people.
The Nokia N97 is a decent smartphone for the price and features. It has a dual keyboard for extra choice, a high-pixel video camera, and plenty of memory for games and documents. So if your business calls for a smartphone but you haven’t closed that big deal yet, pick up the Nokia N97.
The Usefulness of External SD Card Readers
Mar 7th
Seems like every gadget you pick up now has an SD card inside. These “secure digital” format memory cards are now coming in sizes that would have been considered insane just a few years ago. The upside to this is that you can store photos, presentations, video files and more in your hand-held business tech devices. However, sometimes it can be a challenge getting those same files onto your desktop or laptop in short order.
If your computer does not have an internal memory card reader, you are going to need to purchase an external SD card reader. Most of your devices can connect to a computer with a USB cable, but they are easy to misplace. Without the cable or an SD cart slot, you will not be able to view or transfer files onto your computer.
External SD card readers are convenient because you do not have to install anything. Unlike internal SD card readers, which require you to break apart your desktop computer and figure out how to wire it internally, an external reader simply plugs into an available USB port. From there, you remove the card from the device and insert it into the reader. Go to your “Control Panel” and double-click on the SD card icon to view the contents.
Portable media readers are easy to transport in a purse, briefcase, desk drawer or laptop case. Some media readers even have an LCD screen that lets you look at the files before you even transfer them! This is especially helpful for photographers, who like to examine their digital photos right away and see which ones they can delete. The best external SD card readers have multiple slots for different sized cards. They should be able to read MicroSD cards, SD cards, Compact Flash cards, MicroDrive and more.
External card readers are especially important if you happen to have an older computer. SD cards are great for a variety of uses, including system backups. Store your photographs or important documents from your computer onto an SD card and put it in a safe location. Even if you rarely use digital media, having an SD card reader will certainly come in handy someday.
Taking Your iPod for a Ride
Feb 27th
As a business professional, you probably spend more than the average amount of time in your car. Whether you are traveling from one city to another or just driving to local appointments, you spend hours every week behind the wheel. Of course, you may be able to redeem that time with a phone and Bluetooth headset. But sometimes it would be nice to recharge with some of your favorite music. The easiest way to make sure your favorite music goes with you is to use an iPod car kit.
Apple iPods have an endless array of accessories. One of the most popular accessories is the car adapter kit. Some iPods are Bluetooth compatible, which means you can synchronize it with your car system and play it without wires. Most new cars that are manufactured today have an iPod integration feature.
As long as you have a built-in vehicle radio, you can play your iPod through your speakers. Car adapter kits usually connect the iPod to the radio with a 3.5 mm auxiliary input cable. Once you tune the radio to a certain frequency, you can play any song on the device. You will need this type of car kit if you drive an older model car.
An iPod car kit is much better than relying on CDs, tapes and radio stations for your musical entertainment. CDs are scratched easily, which causes them to skip; tapes are outdated and most terrestrial radio stations are full of commercials. If you have satellite radio, you have to pay a monthly subscription. However, if you hook up your iPod, you have instant access to your own personal playlist.
You can find iPod car kits anywhere, but the best deals are found online. Just make sure that the kit is compatible with your device. A universal kit can connect any type of iPod, which is a nice value if you think you might upgrade your MP3 player in the future. Never rely on the radio again. Bring your iPod, charger and cable with you on road trips and arrive at your appointment relaxed and refreshed.
